SPANISH FORK, UT – The temperatures are falling, and most of Utah is preparing to see white blankets of snow. Spanish Fork Gun Club, on the other hand, is also planning to see green this winter season. Not the green grass, but the green jerseys of the Skyline X youth shotgun shooting team.
Skyline X, based out of Spanish Fork Gun Club in Spanish Fork, Utah is a youth shotgun shooting team for youth ages 8 to 24 years old that introduces, grows, supports, and educates youth, and their families to firearm safety and shotgun shooting sports. The shooting season for the scholastic team begins November 7, 2019. There is still plenty of space available on the team for anyone that would still like to register.
“I am excited about the new season,” said Jenny McGowan, Head Coach, Skyline X. “Getting to help kids find their places in this world is so rewarding. We have many team members who just didn’t love playing a normal sport and just wanted to be in the mountains shooting their guns. They now have found their home on Skyline X. I am so lucky to watch these kids grow not only in shotgun shooting but in their personal lives. I am so thankful that they let me be a part of it!”
"Shooting sports and teams like Skyline X offer a fantastic alternative to traditional sports programs," explains Brian Beard, President of Utah Youth Education in Shooting Sports. “Shooting sports does not necessarily cater to one gender or another, or even to those with the highest athletic ability. This opens doors to those students that don’t generally participate in traditional extracurricular activities. Shooting sports has also proven to be the safest high school sport available. Students are not being regularly injured and sent home with concussions, broken bones, bumps and bruises that are often associated with traditional sports.”
Skyline X ended its previous season with just under 60 members making it the largest youth shotgun shooting team in the state. The team is part of the statewide organization, the Utah Youth Education in Shooting Sports (UTYESS). Their goal is to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, self-reliance, respect, personal discipline, responsibility, citizenship, teamwork, and sportsmanship through regular practice and competition at local, state, and national events.
Along with the great shooting events and competitions held throughout the season, High School athletes are also able to earn Varsity Letters in Trap, Skeet, or Sporting Clays through the UTYESS Independent Lettering Program. This independent lettering program not only encourages athletes to do continually improve in their shooting fields but also further stresses the importance of academics through sports.
"It has been an incredible experience watching this youth team grow over the years from just a handful of teens, to more than 50 shooters now!" Says Kiersten Dumas, Spanish Fork Gun Club Manager. "It is refreshing to see more and more youth get involved. I enjoy watching these kids grow more and more confident in their shooting abilities. It truly doesn’t get better than giving kids their first '25 straight patch.' I am looking forward to this 2019-2020 Skyline X Shooting season."
